Two new kayak programs on the Cape Fear River!

We are pleased to announce two new  and unique kayak programs on the Cape Fear River! Both routes combine the rural and urban aspects of the river to give the paddler a unique perspective on this historic river. The Eagle Island Expedition starts with a rustic put in just outside of the town of Navassa. The paddle begins within the shelter of the marshes but within a mile we empty out into the wide expanse of the river. From here the more urban aspects of the Cape Fear River basin present themselves. At mile two we will pull off on a scenic section of Eagle Island that once served as the base camp  of one the river's more notorious hermits. From Eagle Island we paddle past the wreck of a Civil War era vessel and pass under the Isabella Holmes Bridge into Downtown Wilmington. With downtown on our left and the Battleship North Carolina on our right the paddler enjoys an intimate view of the river and it's surroundings. We pull out just before the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge at Dram Tree Park.

The Barrier Islands Expedition starts with a put in at River Road Park. From here we run parallel to river road and tour the chain of undeveloped barrier islands that straddle the river and the shipping channel. These islands function as a habitat to a wide variety of bird life, including: heron, ibis, osprey, pelican, and red tail and red shoulder hawk. The rustic aspects of this paddle begin to change as we approach the Port of Wilmington. Entering the port will give the paddler a perspective on shipping that few people get to experience outside of a kayak! We pull out at the state of the art kayak platform at Dram Tree Park.

More information on these new kayak programs can be found by going to the expeditions page and clicking on Cape Fear River Expeditions.
