Zeke's Island is located in the Cape Fear River Basin and is one of the three islands that make up the National Estuarine Research Reserve. Zeke's Island, North Island and No Name Island comprise over 1,100 acres of the Reserve. We put in at the public boat ramp just beyond the Ft. Fisher Ferry Terminal and paddle within the shelter of "The Rocks" into the marshes of Zeke's Island. "The Rocks," is a unique feature in its own right; built in the 1800's as an erosion break, it stretches from the mainland all the way to Zeke's Island. They are visible and accessible at low tide, and some visitors have walked over to Zeke's Island only to find themselves stranded once the tides rise. We will explore the marshes and tidal flats within Zeke's Island. These areas provide the single most important shorebird habitat in Southeastern, NC. We will see a wide variety of birdlife and possibly get a glimpse of a loggerhead or green sea turtle.
